5 Mistakes to Avoid When Using Medical Marijuana
1. Too Much, Too Fast
One of the absolute biggest mistakes that new users make is eating or smoking too much cannabis, too fast. If you’re smoking/vaping, wait at least 10 minutes between hits. Edibles can take up to 2 hours to kick in. Many new users are under the impression that they haven’t used enough if they don’t feel the effects, immediately. This mistake can lead to paranoia, panic attacks and heightened anxiety. Your best bet is to try small doses and wait to see how it affects you before you consume some more.
2. Not Experimenting with Different Strains
Different strains will affect you differently. Some strains are higher in THC (euphoric, relaxing, pain reliever) and others have higher concentrations of CBD (anti-inflammatory, mood boosting, anti-psychotic). Using the wrong strain can turn you off to cannabis, forever. It’s important to speak with a knowledgeable professional that can help you choose the best strain for your symptoms.
3. Expecting ‘Magic’
While marijuana offers some ‘magical’ qualities, it is not really magic at all. Cannabis is excellent at treating symptoms but does not (typically) cure illnesses. In order to continue reaping the benefits of medical marijuana, you must utilize it consistently when experiencing symptoms. Again, if you’re not getting relief, consider trying a different strain or vary your dose.
4. Failing to Prepare for Potential Side Effects
Most of the time, you will not experience negative side effects unless you have taken an extremely large dose. With that being said, small side effects such as dry mouth, reddened eyes, dizziness, increased appetite and paranoia, can occur. If you’re a first time user, it’s best to use small doses, slowly. The first time you use medical marijuana should be in a place that you feel comfortable, like your own home. By acknowledging that you may experience some of these side effects, you will be more prepared and less likely to have a panic attack.
5. Improper Storage
Storing your cannabis correctly, can promote longevity and maintain its quality. If you are smoking or vaping your medical marijuana, you should keep it in an airtight (mason) jar. This will not only keep it from getting crushed, but also protect it from mold and humidity. It’s best to keep your bud in a cool, dark place, as exposure to light can degrade the plant and reduce its potency.
