If you’re new to the world of medical marijuana, you probably have quite a few questions floating around in your head. The most common question among new patients is what is the difference between THC and CBD? There are 4 main differences between THC and CBD, which we will address below in order to help you understand which of the two may be a better option for you.

1. Psychoactive Vs. Non-Psychoactive

We have built-in receptors all throughout our body. These are cannabinoid receptors, more easily referred to as CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are found in practically every major organ in the body. CB2 receptors are specifically related to the immune system.

THC is psychoactive, meaning that it affects the body and the mind. This cannabinoid is what gives marijuana it’s classic “high” or feeling of euphoria. It accomplishes this by binding directly to the Cannabinoid receptors. THC is better used at night, or when you know you’re going to be home for a while.

CBD is non-psychoactive, which means it has the capabilities to heal, without the euphoric high. CBD binds indirectly to the Cannabinoid receptors. This is an excellent choice for those that need relief during the day. It will allow you to reap the medical benefits while maintaining a clear head.

2. Found In:

THC is only found in Cannabis plants. Generally, marijuana needs to be grown in warm, humid climates. The typical cannabis flower contains 10-14% THC. This cannabinoid is still illegal in some states.

CBD is not only found in cannabis plants, but hemp plants as well. Hemp can be grown in a wide variety of environments, and contains less than 1% THC. While CBD is found in marijuana, hemp plants actually contain a higher concentration of CBD than cannabis plants do. CBD is legal in some form in all 50 states.

3. Helps Treat:

THC can treat pain, stress, insomnia, loss of appetite, nausea, Glaucoma, muscle spasms, and more!

CBD is capable of treating inflammation, pain, stress, anxiety, depression, migraines, arthritis, epilepsy, paranoia, digestive problems, and more!

It’s apparent that THC and CBD can treat several of the same symptoms. It accomplishes this because they share some of the same properties. The main difference is that THC is associated with a high, so if you’re looking to stay clear-headed, you should choose CBD. If you’re seeking that euphoric, enlightening feeling, consider trying THC.

4. Possible Side Effects

THC can produce side effects such as anxiety, paranoia, memory impairment, changes in appetite and/or weight, etc… It’s important to note that THC does not cause anxiety or paranoia in everyone, however, it’s difficult to know how you will react until you give it a try. If you’ve never used THC before, do so in the comfort of your own home around a trusted, sober friend or family member.

CBD can cause you to experience drowsiness, changes in appetite and/or weight, and sometimes, though rarely, diarrhea. It is extremely uncommon to experience any negative side effects when using CBD, but if it’s your first time use caution. Start out slow and progress from there.

We hope that we’ve cleared a few things up for you so that you can better understand the main differences between THC and CBD.
